Financing
Voters in North Little Rock, Ark., have approved a new 1 percent sales tax to help fund a new ballpark for the Double A Travelers. The tax will last for two years and will raise $32 million. A portion of the money, $5 million, will be used for facilities to aid senior citizens.
The Travelers agreed to a 20-year lease on the 5,000-seat venue and will pay rent equal to half the amount that revenues exceed expenses in its new ballpark. The team maintains the venue.
Officials estimate the ballpark will annually generate between $3 million and $3.5 million from admission fees, concessions, advertising, suite rentals, and parking. The stadium will use between seven and eight acres of an 11-acre site. The property is currently owned by Little Rock financier Warren Stephens who will donate the portion of the land needed for the ballpark. The donation will give Stephens naming rights to the venue.
The Travelers are owned by public stockholders rather than a single owner or limited partnership. Dickey–Stephens Park on North Little Rock’s riverfront is only the third ballpark to be the home of the Arkansas Travelers. (Baseball, Facilities, Minor League, Professional Sports, Venue)
