Formerly the Knickerbocker, Pepsi acquired the naming rights for the facility in 1997. When those expired, the Times Union newspaper purchased the rights in 2006. The arena is home to the AHL Devils. The arena cost $70 million to build, but was budgeted at $36 million.
The arena got a new lounge for fans to use before and after events. The 120-seat Citizens Bank Club in the New York venue opened in July 2005.
The $600,000 cost of construction was covered by sponsors and advertisers. Citizens Bank paid $50,000 for naming rights in a five-year deal.
With chandeliers, cherry wood furnishings and photos of sports events and concerts, the club has 50 stadium-style seats with a view of the floor. That section of seats has been leased for three years by Wurld Media of Saratoga, at a cost of $300,000. The lease covers concerts and events other than Siena College basketball and hockey.
In 2002, the venue posted a profit of more than $112,700, which was the second time the building has been in the black since it opened.
Operating profits were above projections at $1.7 million. Operating costs were put at $3.8 million. At the time, managers expected a down year because of the loss of the arena football Firebirds. Low concert bookings also promised a down year.
That changed in late 2002 when bookings increased and the building hosted such popular acts as Bruce Springsteen and the Dave Matthews Band. The arena hosted a total of 24 concerts. Attendance was up 10 percent to 763,641.
Building officials said a new scoreboard and other amenities helped draw crowds. (Facilities, Financial, Ice Hockey, Professional Sports)
